New Quilt Blogger - Blog Hop 2014

Today I wanna share with you that I'm participating in the 2014 New Quilt Blogger Blog Hop hosted by Beth from Plum and June. I'm really excited and honored!

When I first heard about the blog hop I got really excited to jump in! First because I'd get a chance to be featured and connected with other new quilt bloggers. Second because I was sure I'd learn a lot about blogging and modern quilting.

So, in this post I'm gonna talk about my trajectory as a quilter and I hope you stay with me until the end of this post where I'm gonna share with you some links from other new quilt bloggers.

I'm Janaina - my name is a typical Portuguese-African name (not very popular these days) - and I was born in Brazil. As soon as I moved to USA five years ago, I had to make everyone's else life easier, then I started to introduce myself as Jana. It's still works! LOL

I always loved to dedicated my life to study... I spent about nine years graduating and getting a master degree in History. I LOVE everything that has a story to tell... usually old stuff!

Well, you could ask, how I got into sewing and quilting?! It was seven years ago while finishing my Master in History I was introduced to patchwork and you know the rest... felt in love with quilting.

(Some of my favorite quilts! All patterns are from Camille Roskelley.)

But, quilting wasn't my first adventure in this fascinating quilting/pathcwork world. When I learned how to sew I started making fabric bags. If you're curious to check them, please click here. I had an online store while I used to live in Brazil. I had clients all over the country and my work was featured in some very known teen/fashion magazines. It was a really fun years of my life!

It was after moving to USA that I really learned about quilting. I have taken many classes also taught myself many techniques just as I did when I used to make bags. Quilting books and tutorials are my favorites to learn about quilting.

To finish this post I'd like to share some personal things and tips about blogging and quilting. Stick with me!

1- Blogging tip: Do your best taking nice pictures for your posts! Life is busy and sometimes we have no chance to read big posts, but if you've nice pictures I guarantee you that your readers will be pleased seeing colors and details in your project pics!

2- Quilting tip: I'm very curious and love taking classes about what I'm interested in the moment. I really encourage you to take as many classes as you can if you wanna learn the basics or build new skills on quilting. But, the more important, spend time trying the projects you saw in classes, books, tutorials. It is when you MAKE that you really get to know the process. And when you have a chance to make mistakes that you really learn something NEW!

3- A question for you, reader: What you think about my blog's name? I kept the old name and URL "Janaina Machado" because it used to be my bag's brand name for years. Right now I don't have a bag business anymore... Does my blog's name and url make it difficult for you to remember my blog?

4- My dream Vacation spot: Rome and Greece.

5- My favorite book: Bible

6 - My favorite Movie/Series: I'll always love "Gilmore Girls".

7 - My favorite TV Show: all from HGTV, I love makeovers!

PS: I'd LOVE if you could answer number 3 in the comments! THANK You!

Hope you enjoyed this post, and visit my friends in this hop listed bellow!

Your quilts are beautiful! Hmm, don't really watch TV anymore, too busy sewing ;) Always loved to watch How I Met Your Mother though. Niel Patrick Harris is da bomb!

I don't think your blog name/URL is any different to any other blog name/URL. It's your name, so people will always remember who writes it! (Unlike mine, for example, you might remember my blog name but not who *I* am :) ).

People have lots of different random words/names for their blog that mean different things to them so I never really think too much about what someone's URL is. If you're happy with your blog name as it means something to you, then there's no problem with it! :D

You have really lovely quilts! Camille Roskelley has the best patterns!

I think it is fine calling your blog by your name. If you wanted to change it have you thought about something like "Machado about Quilts." I am sure it is not the right way to say your last name, but it could be a twist on "Much Ado about..."

I like your blog name as your name!Love the header and the feel of your blog!

I like your blog name and think it makes your blog more memorable rather than less. It's easy to get all the more usual blog names muddled up - especially ones which play on the word 'sew' I find! Beautiful quilts too, and that always helps as well!

Hi Jana! I think your blog name is just fine, and I also really like Jasmine's suggestion in her comment. I think that having pride in a unique name is fantastic (How is Yvonne Fuchs for you?!?!)! :)

wow i totally love your quilts,
and I think its totally fine to keep your blog name, its not difficult and easy to remember Im sure, like your clean style and header

I don't see anything wrong with your name. It's nice to have an alternative to all the sewing related names, and you can guarantee no one else has it! I do keep thinking your first name is Jana and forget the -ina, but the Machado is very distinctive.

You have really gorgeous quilts! I especially like your wrench blocks and how the corners are different. :D

Leanne Parsons said...

I think your blog name is fine, and means readers will actually know your name instead of just your blog name. I really love your pinwheel quilt - pinwheels are my favourite block.

Liz said...

I think the blog name is ok. I do like the comment from Jasmine though, with the play on words. Great blogging tip with the photos, too!

The name might be a little complicated but I like it. It's unique and beautiful.

Hi Jana, your blog name is great, don't change a thing, at least for now. I am pleased to meet you. I am a new follower via bloglovin. Drop over and visit me once in a while. Blog can be neglected but I do post giveaways there and quilting matters and sometimes interest items and funny things.

rappy said...

Your quilts are lovely! I like your use of colour.

Like the others, I don't see any need to change the name.

Shauna said...

I don't that it makes it harder to remember you, but it might make it harder to find you. I think these days people follow via bloglovin, feedly or email, so it won't really matter.

Love your quilts!!!!

I like the colors in your quilts - so fun and cheery. I grew up with an unusual European last name and while it made things more difficult at times (take out, dry cleaners), it was nice to be unique! Go with it! :)

Hmmm, I don't think that the title is too bad. I've got to admit that I might have giggled at the post suggesting Machado about Quilts. Hehe, I'm such a sucker for puns sometimes. Your quilts look great too!

annieb said...

I loved The Gilmore Girls too. And I love HGTV. Your quilts are very pretty. The name is fine, although I think Jasmine's idea is awesome, and unforgettable.
It's such a personal thing.

Sarah @ Berry Barn Designs said...

I like when people use their name as a blog title - if mine wasn't taken and the name of a few public people already, maybe I would've done the same! lol If you wanted to be specific to quilting, you could add "quilts" or "quilting" to the end, but I don't think you need to. They say using your own name for a business is the way to go, so there you go, Jana! (Maybe on your about page, include the pronunciation? Is it JanIna or JanAna or am I wayyy off? ; )

Beth said...

Do you mean because they aren't exactly the same? I like your blog name (and header.)

Terri Ann said...

My goodness I really enjoy the quilting you have on the samples you showed in this post! I think you blog name is fine if you're using it for your brand but I do really like Jasmine's suggestion too cause it's a really clever twist on your name. I follow blogs more by feeds than by remembering URLs, but maybe that's just me.

Barbara Konkle said...

I love that you use your name. I use Feedly so that helps me keep up with everyones blog so remembering is not a problem. I love that your fav book is the Bible! Mine too! I LOVE Gilmore Girls! Such an awesome show!

Kristyn @ Melon Patch Quilts said...

I like the ribbon graphic on your header and it is well laid out- regardless of the name. I usually bookmark the blogs I go back to so rarely remember names anyway.

I love all things HGTV too! I think that I might have a hard time remembering at first how to type in the URL, but I don't think you need to change your blog name. If I typed in your address frequently, my web browser would bring it up after typing the first few letters, and I follow blogs in bloglovin' so I don't have to type in URLs to find them.

Melanie said...

I think your name is great for a blog name. It's actually easier to remember :) I follow via Bloglovin so it makes it easy to follow!

PS: Your quilts are quite lovely!

I love the colors in your aqua and teal colored quilt. Your favorite book is my favorite book too :>)

I think your blog name is fine as is! I also like Jasmine's 'Much ado about ...' suggestion.

Hi Jana - your quilts are lovely! I am also a big fan of Camille's Simply Retro. I look forward to following you and seeing more of your beautiful creations! Linda

I think it is completely fine to have your name as your URL, even the well-established Camille Roskelley just uses her name for her web address. And the feel of your blog is great. I really agree with you on both of your tips, blogging and quilting. Your name as your blog title is great. I like the emphasis on Jana because that is something short and easy to remember. You could even just have it be "Jana." That is so cool that you had a famous fabric bag company in Brasil! And now you're here with us lowly Americans :)

Marly said...

I like your first quilt on this page; it's beautifully done.
About your blog name: I don't find it any more difficult than some of the others around, which may be English but are very oblique. We don't all live in an English speaking country. I'd keep it the way it is.

Hi Jana! I loved reading your post today. I think your current blog name is fine. And as another blogger mentioned, I think most people organize the blogs they read through a reader like bloglovin' or feedly so once they've added your blog, they don't need to type it over and over. Of course, if you were going for the quilty pun I think Jasmine's suggestion was great!

Oh Brazil! We were just there this past January! What an incredible & beautiful country! While in Rio de Janiero, we had a fabulous tour guide by the name of Olivia. I was truly awestruck by the love and compassion all Brazilians seem to have for their homeland.

I don't see any issue with your blog name. Most people don't type in the address anyway, many people use a blog reader and just click on a link to read a blog...

Great job on your blog and all your works!

Lovely name for a URL.

Continually seeking to learn more is a great attitude with quilting - and life. Unless a catchy blog name was pulling at your heartstrings there's no reason to make a change. Have fun with the hop.

Sharon said...

Your blog is pretty, I like the clean white and soft color. Keep the name! It's you, anyone following will keep track of you regardless of the name

Kate Yates said...

I agree with most others about your blog name. I actually think I have an easier time remembering blogs that have the same name as the writer, maybe because I can make the connection, like putting a face with a name? I don't know, but I like it. I also like your header. Now I'm off to check out some of your bags, I've never made a bag before!

Daisy said...

I agree with most of the comments - using your name is great! I use a reader so I don't really need to remember anyone's URL anyway. And it's true, sometimes I wish I knew people's real names but I'm often only familiar with the blog name. :)

Jane said...

Nice to meet you Jana. I like your blog name - sometimes I have trouble connecting the names of bloggers with their blog names, so I like that yours is one and the same.

I love Gilmore GirlsI I think your blog name is just fine, it's your name and your featuring your work. Most people follow using a service so I wouldn't stress about it too much.

Camille Roskelley makes such beautiful patterns. I love learning more about quilting too. What I've really got to learn is how to make a great bag! Great to meet you.

About your blog name, for me, it doesn't matter, I follow you on Bloglovin, so I recon blogs by their look, and not their name.

Erica said...

Nice to meet you, Jana! I enjoyed reading your post and your projects are gorgeous. I don't have a problem remembering the name of your blog so I would leave it as is.Gilmore Girls is good - I used to watch it with my daughters!

since I'm going to subscribe to your blog via email, it won't make it hard to remember - but I find a lot of times I have trouble remembering what people's blog URLs are.
